Govt’s new one-stop portal, gov.uk, launched

Gov.uk is focused on the needs of users, not the needs of government

Government websites Directgov and Business Link have been replaced with a single domain, gov.uk, to deal with all of the government’s online services, as part of its ‘digital by default’ initiative.

According to Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude, “Gov.uk is focused on the needs of users, not the needs of government… Not only is the result simpler, clearer and faster for users, it will also cost taxpayers up to £70m less per year than the services it replaces.”

The website is the fourth attempt in 20 years to create a one-stop point on the web for central government.
