Leeds City Council launched the YouChoose challenge last month, an online budget simulator which asks residents to set the budget for the next financial year while trying to save GBP 40 million. So far, over 1,000 citizens have used the tool and the views of all those who use it before 24th January will be taken into account when the budget is decided in February.

The purpose of the simulator is to determine what services residents give more priority to whilst raising awareness amongst them regarding how council funds are used.

The council’s leader, Councillor Keith Wakefield, said: “The challenge is by no means easy, with the decisions getting harder and harder each year with another £40m of savings needed coming on top of the £145m reductions already achieved. That is why it is vital we hear as many views as we can to help us shape a budget which focuses on what people want as well as need.”
