The funding will run to 2015 and be used to set up a GBP7.5m Data Strategy Board Breakthrough Fund to which public organisations can apply, and a GBP850,000 Open Data Immersion Programme which companies can apply to. The funds will facilitate the release of data from public bodies and support companies in reusing data for new products and services.

The intention is to incentivise SMEs and start-ups to collaborate with data owners in discovering new business opportunities behind varying data sets. The measures and due to be in place by early April 2013.

This new funding will help us to exploit the power of open data to fuel social and economic growth. It will free up more data for commercial exploitation, help drive innovation in public services… and will help embed transparency in the private sector,” commented Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office.
