Universal Credit scheme faces backlash

Universal Credit

Gender rights groups have begun campaigning against the proposed introduction of the Universal Credit payment scheme as backlash against the flagship policy sets in.The Universal Credit scheme, one of the Coalition Government’s proposals, aims to reduce administration by bunching benefits and tax credits into one single payment. The system will replace previous forms of assistance that have previously been paid to the ‘main carer’ for children in a household, 95% of whom are women, and is instead likely to be paid to the main earner.

Groups are concerned that this move will have a detrimental effect on female carers within low income families, who will have less of a chance to earn a steady income themselves.
