According to an interim report into the Universal Credit welfare system, 90% of people in the pilot are now claiming their benefits online. The government has also thought about implementing a ‘mobile first’ strategy for delivering of the scheme.
The Department for Work and Pensions said: “Universal Credit is bridging the digital gap, with 90 percent of people making their claims online. This is higher than the proportion of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance online under the current benefits system.”
The statistic comes from a survey of just 373 people who have claimed dole during the last two years who are now claiming Universal Credit. 41% encountered a problem with their application, from the website crashing to it just simply taking too long. However, 73% did manage to complete their application on the first try.
7% of those claimants who did not use the online tool said that they gave up when they encountered problems. 2% claimed they did not have internet access or just preferred not to use the online option, and 1% said that they didn’t realise it was an option.
