The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has spent £92,574 on training staff in using social media sites such as Twitter since 2010, it has emerged.
The figures were revealed following a Freedom of Information Request – a day after British officials in Washington got into trouble for tweeting a photo of a cake ablaze with sparklers to mark the burning of the White House by English troops.
Courses provided to FCO staff in London and overseas included “using social media in a crisis situation”. Staff were also taught to use social media to communicate Foreign Office policies to governments and the public.
The Foreign Office said: “Ministers are the most important channel that we have to explain foreign policy to the taxpayers who fund our work. Being able to do this in the media is vital to ensuring that the public in the UK and overseas understand our policies and that we are open and transparent.”
