With voting for the winners of this year’s Digital Leaders 100 in full swing, we wanted to let you know more about the 100 nominees who have made it onto the list across all ten categories. Today we cover Best Central Government Digital Transformation Team or Project.
The award is specifically designed to celebrate a project or team within a central government department that has delivered a great example of channel shift in the past year.
The winner will have demonstrated an innovative and effective use of technology, design and communication to implement and promote the transferral of public-facing services to digital channels.
The ten finalists for the Best Central Government Digital Transformation Team or Project are:
CARER’S ALLOWANCE DIGITAL SERVICE, DEPARTMENT FOR WORK AND PENSIONS
This exemplar initiative has transformed the way DWP delivers digital services, putting customer needs at the heart of its service delivery. Now it is being used to upskill DWP staff who are then delivering other digital services in the department.
CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION AUTHORITY, MINISTRY OF JUSTICE
The CICA team has delivered an innovative ‘end-to-end’ digital transformation programme, revolutionising how its manages over 35,000 annual compensation claims by converting its organisational operations, mail room, Customer Service Centre and online channels into a single, integrated digital workflow. As a result, over 90% of applications are now being made online.
DIGITAL MARKETPLACE TEAM, GOVERNMENT DIGITAL SERVICE
The team, run by Tony Singleton, Director of Digital Commercial Programme at GDS, has delivered an online marketplace that allows public sector bodies to search for services that are covered by the G-Cloud framework and that provides businesses of all sizes the same opportunity to offer commodity cloud services to government.
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION TEAM, DFPNI
Working in partnership with BT, service experts, the public, and other innovative organisations, the team in Northern Ireland work to transform and modernise services into high quality end-to-end digital services; where this isn’t possible they provide an assisted digital support channel.
DRIVER AND VEHICLE LICENSING AGENCY
DVLA’s View Driving Licence exemplar is an online service which allows the public to view which vehicles they can drive, penalty points and licence expiry date. With the Vehicle Management tool and Personalised Registration set to follow, the DVLA is set to deliver 3 exemplars to the public within 400 days.
GOV.UK TEAM, GOVERNMENT DIGITAL SERVICE
GOV.UK became the official website of the UK government in 2012, changing the way citizen’s access government services and information online. Since then the team has replaced over 1,700 separate government websites and reached over a billion visits.
HMRC DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, HM REVENUE & CUSTOMS
Led by Wayne Robinson, Head of Digital Communications, HMRC DCT successfully launched the first phase of its new Invotra intranet in early 2015, which gives HMRC the ability to target content directly to the users’ desktop, while giving staff the ability to quickly and easily find and share information across the organisation.
HOME OFFICE TECHNOLOGY, HOME OFFICE
The Home Office intranet has completely transformed into an Open Standards based SaaS cloud service built on Open Source technologies to enable content editors to create and publish material with greater agility. This service is accessible across government to support at least 28,000 users for greater communication and collaboration with various stakeholders.
LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY, OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC GUARDIAN
The digitisation of the LPA was an early exemplar for digital by default. It is now easier and simpler for people to make sure their wishes are followed if their mental capacity declines, thanks to the lasting powers of attorney application process being one of the first services to go completely digital.
RESILIENCE DIRECT, ORDNANCE SURVEY
ResilienceDirect mapping enables the resilience community to share information effectively, across organisational boundaries and technologies, to create incident maps underpinned by OS location data provided under the Public Sector Mapping Agreement. Incident maps can be annotated and can consume and display additional data sets to provide an intelligent and consistent view for response.

Which project or team will win your vote? The results will be combined with the deliberations of an expert judging panel to determine the overall winners, culminating in a black-tie gala dinner on 25th June at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane in Central London.
