With voting for the winners of this year’s Digital Leaders 100 in full swing, we wanted to let you know more about the 100 nominees who have made it onto the list across all ten categories. Today we cover the Best Citizen Services App.
The award is specifically designed to recognise a business that, in the last 12 months, has created a mobile app that has had a transformational impact on how citizens engage with public services, demonstrating excellence in both technology and design.
The ten finalists for the Best Citizen Services App are:
Users can video incidents where events are of concern but not to the extent that the emergency services are needed,using their mobile device. The app provides instant video recording, which is uploaded to a secure remote server and an emergency call button if the incident escalates into a crisis.
BRADFORD CITY MOBILE APP, CITY OF BRADFORD METROPOLITAN DISTRICT COUNCIL
Bradford residents will never miss their bin days again, as the app sends alerts the night before each collection is due. Residents can also set up alerts for job vacancies and school closures, report a wide range of issues and find information about our popular services.
EMAIL A PRISONER APP, PRISON TECHNOLOGY SERVICES
This app offers a quick, efficient, secure alternative method of communication for prisoners to contact their families, friends, legal professionals and related organisations – meaning they can receive more frequent and varied communication.
ESB AGILE, MERITEC
The platform offers business solutions for local government by enabling choices not otherwise available when it comes to implementing ICT solution. It is available in two basic forms: as a toolkit to generate applications and reengineer processes; and as ready to use applications for a range of services, especially customer and digital services.
YOUR LIBRARY, SOLUS
Transforming traditional libraries into digital community hubs, the app allows libraries to meet the demands of 24/7 instant information culture. It has changed how users engage with library services, allowing e-downloads of books to various devices or just quick and easy online access to the library services.
OURGATESHEAD.ORG.UK, GATESHEAD VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS COUNCIL
Designed and developed with ease of use, information can quickly be filtered by locality or topic on Gateshead’s flagship community website, enabling 1,000 community groups and organisations to promote their activities, news and events to the local residents.
POCKET MIDWIFE, APPITIZED
Nottingham University Hospitals asked Appitized to create a week-by-week pregnancy guide app which can be updated by hospital staff via a content management system. It comprises a 3-42 week progress calendar, with helpful tips and advice, reassuring the mother at all stages of pregnancy.
TORFAEN COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL APP, TORFAEN COUNTY BOROUGH COUNCIL
The council’s app plays a key part in its commitment to improve the quality and range of digital services for its residents. Its integration with the council’s award-winning social media activity, website and back office services means people are now benefiting from a truly joined up, multi-channel customer service.
This app is a peer-to-peer system that provides extra safety cover for walkers and other enthusiasts where there is little or no mobile phone coverage. Subscribers add personal details, building a network of users and linking their phones in a ‘mesh’ which helps pinpoint people in trouble who may be in need of rescue.
VITALITY HEALTH HUB, DIGITAL LIFE SCIENCES / VITALITY PARTNERSHIP
Vitality patients can access GPs or nurses on the go via skype, web or phone. Over 66% of Vitality patients are now choosing to transact with Vitality remotely and digitally, wherever they are, on the same day, at a time convenient to them.

Which app will win your vote? The results will be combined with the deliberations of an expert judging panel to determine the overall winners, culminating in a black-tie gala dinner on 25th June at the Hilton Hotel on Park Lane in Central London.
