Digital activities mark UK Parliament Week festivities

UK Parliament Week, an annual festival of events intended to connect communities with their democracy, has kicked off. More than 250 events will take place across the United Kingdom throughout the week in the biggest UK Parliament Week ever.

As part of Parliament’s commitment to building an interactive, digital democracy, several online events and campaigns will be taking place and Parliament’s social media channels will track the conversations using #UKPW16.

An Introduction to the UK Parliament
Monday 14 November
The UK Parliament has teamed up with FutureLearn, a massive open online course (MOOC) provider to develop its first course, ‘An introduction to the UK Parliament’. It provides an open and accessible opportunity for the public to learn more about Parliament and how it is essential to democracy.

Inside Parliament 
Monday 14 November – Tuesday 22 November
Fun Kids, a free to air radio station available across the UK and online at, is providing a guide to Parliament exploring its history and the everyday lives of people who work within its walls.

Students and UK Parliament Week
Monday 14 November – Sunday 20 November
Online activity for students aged 14-24 involving thread discussions and debates, articles, social and newsletter promotion and politics based Q&As.

Unlikely Parliamentarians
Monday 14 November – Friday 18 November
The History of Parliament Trust will publish daily blogs on ‘unlikely parliamentarians’ – the men and women across history who became parliamentarians only unexpectedly. These blogs will feature some of the History of Parliament’s latest research and span the 15th century to the present day.

Speak Out On Twitter
Saturday 19 November – 9am-9pm
BFM Group UK are hosting a Twitter chat, asking people to tweet what they think should change politically, using #DoDemocracy.

Civic Voice Lobbying Day
Saturday 19 November – 9am-9pm
Members of the public are encouraged to meet and lobby their MP, telling them about issues that are affecting them and sharing the results online using the hashtags #MeetYourMP #CivicVoiceLobbyDay.
