DigiFeb is a series of events and roadshows offering fun digital activities and learning opportunities across the borough.
Stockport’s first DigiFest takes place on Saturday 18 February and includes free coding lessons, tech workshops for all ages such as creating electronic badges with LED lights, 3D printing, Minecraft coding, gamecraft and much more.
Visitors will also be able to learn more about getting online, staying safe online and the new features of the council’s online services. Those unsure how to use computers, tablets or smartphones can bring them along to a Digi Drop-in to find out how they work.
Other digital events happening across Stockport include:
- Love Digital! 14 February 10am to 3pm, Offerton Community Centre. Learn to Love Digital: get online, stay safe and save money online.
- Digital Marketing Workshop: 17 February at the Stockport Business and Innovation Centre. A workshop to help small businesses develop an online profile.
- Hackfest: 21 and 22 February at Fred Perry House, Conference Suite. This aims to encourage the development of coding skills in young people aged 14 to 18 and to involve businesses in setting coding challenges.
- Bridgehall Digital Roadshow: 27 February 10.30am to 3pm at Bridgehall Community Centre. How to find work online, learn new digital skills and how to save money online.
- Digital Marketing Workshop: 28 February at the Stockport Business and Innovation Centre. A workshop for small businesses that wish to improve their digital presence.
- #SKhackathon: 4 March from 8am to 8pm at Fred Perry House. A ‘Hackathon’ to help connect local residents with their wider community. This is an event where professionals, amateurs and students (16+) with different skills come together to use data to solve a problem in a short amount of time. DigiFeb coincides with the release of the council’s completely new mobile-enabled website where residents can report, apply and pay for things and find information on a wide range of services quickly and easily.
After talking to residents and businesses about what they wanted, Stockport added a powerful new search function to help users find the information they are looking for, as well as quick links to browse the topics that most other people are searching for.
A new ‘My Account’ function has also been launched where residents have access to personalised information on their council services.
Another new digital feature is the ability to track the repair of faults, such as street lights that aren’t working. The website enables people to identify the light, check if the fault has already been reported or report it themselves, then follow the status of the repair, until it is resolved. And if they have signed up to My Account they will see the report in their own account dashboard.
Councillor David Sedgwick, Executive Member for Reform and Governance, said: “We have created a new digital offer because our local residents and businesses are expecting more from our services, so we had to invest in new technology, tools and skills to match that expectation. The Digital Stockport programme will also enable us to make further savings whilst delivering public services in new and more efficient ways.”
