Taking the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham into the cloud

How cloud is delivering LBBD’s objectives of cost reductions, smarter working and a reduced building footprint

Following the 2016 Local Government Spending Review, The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham (LBBD) found itself facing two conflicting goals. It needed to reduce IT spending by 25% and downsize its building footprint, while simultaneously meeting its aim of refreshing end-of-life technology to support smarter working and workforce mobility. These demands were further complicated by the extreme time pressure of having to exit its main data centre by December 2016.

Making change happen

To meet the time, cost and quality of service challenges facing the council, Agilisys worked closely with LBBD to outline a cloud-first strategy that would transform and migrate the council’s entire IT estate.

To fully understand its need for change, the council’s existing IT estate was reviewed to develop a future technology roadmap and target operating model, fully aligned to consumption-based pricing.

Agilisys then rationalised and optimised the council’s existing IT systems, ensuring they were fit for purpose, correctly sized and still required to meet future demands.

Finally, LBBD migrated its 236 servers and unstructured data to its IaaS platform. The council’s 3,300 users were migrated to a laptop-first Managed Desktop environment based on Windows 10, Direct Access and Office 2016, and given access to Office 365 and Skype for Business.

Cloud enabled

Today, the London borough is supported by an agile and highly scalable IT infrastructure that’s fully aligned to its smarter working model, building independence and achieving cost reduction goals. LBBD reduced its operating costs by 25%, while also driving a 35% reduction in IT support costs. Backed by a cloud-based suite of technologies, the council has also significantly reduced the need for any costly technology refreshes and upgrades in the future – avoiding potential capital expenditure on the road ahead.

The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham now benefits from state-of-the-art IT infrastructure that scales with demand, enhances resilience and supports true flexible working, taking them ever closer to achieving its ambitious 2020 vision.
