Newcastle marked a key milestone in the city’s superfast broadband roll-out by launching the first fibre cabinet as part of the Go Digital Newcastle programme.
The Wi-Fi hotspots will be provided by GOWEX, which has already created wireless ‘smart cities’ in places like San Francisco, New York, Miami, Dubai and Paris.
According to Cllr Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council: “The internet is transforming the way we live our lives, and the smart successful businesses of the future will be those that recognise this."
Go Digital Newcastle, a government scheme delivered by Newcastle City Council, will see 97 per cent of Newcastle given access to superfast fibre broadband by 2015, free Wi-Fi in Newcastle City Centre and a cloud computing centre.
